Character design: more than just ‘hot’ or ‘beautiful’
When it comes to what makes an anime girl ‘hottest’ or most beautiful, it’s not just about the aesthetics. As Helen McCarthy, an anime historian, explains in an interview, it’s a carefully crafted process designed to appeal to a specific audience. She said:
Target audience is key
“Character design is geared strongly to the target audience for any medium,” McCarthy explains, pointing out that female characters are often designed to signal what kind of show it is. For example, a character wearing revealing clothes might be aimed at a male audience, while a show like Princess Jellyfish caters mostly to female audiences, featuring a diverse range of characters that reflect their interests and desires.
The male protagonist’s influence
The design of the main male character also offers clues about the target audience. The expert said, “If he presents as an ‘ordinary’ schoolboy or salaryman, the story will go in one direction, if as an armoured or armed muscular hero, in another.” This interplay between the main male and female characters helps creators signal the genre and themes of the story.
The CLAMP difference
McCarthy notes that works by the all-female creative team, CLAMP, “appeal to both male and female audiences with a particular interest in fashion and art, as well as covering different types of stories and genres for a range of age groups.” This shows that female designers can create characters that resonate with a broader market.
Modern to classic styles
When comparing classic and modern anime, Helen said fashions in the presentation of female characters have been very varied as regards individual style. She observed two patterns:
- Younger female characters are likely to look like schoolgirls or childlike ‘younger sisters.’
- Older characters are either reassuring mothers or overtly sexual.
Of course, these are very broad categories, but they tend to be consistent across most anime in that they are aimed at attracting a particular viewer.
The anime expert also points out exceptions in film:
- Studio Ghibli: Characters can live in fantasy worlds or in our own world, but the female characters tend to dress prettily and conservatively, in a conventionally ‘feminine’ way.
- Satoshi Kon: These characters dress very much like average Japanese women and girls in the era of the story but can also step outside norms if their character requires it.
For instance, the trans character and the runaway girl living rough in Tokyo Godfathers, the performers in Perfect Blue, or the psychologist in Paprika. But when they are in the real world of their films, they all dress like real people doing their jobs. Their faces, figures, hairstyles, and clothes are believable as part of the real world.
In both (Studio Ghibli and Satoshi Kon films), the filmmakers had/have the power to define their own characters for each film. In most TV anime, the production committee sets the parameters for the desired target audience, and this influences how characters will be designed and styled.
Balancing beauty and depth: when do characters shine
Helen said that not all anime creators balance visual appeal with strong character development:
There are some truly remarkable writers (such as Mari Okada and CLAMP) who develop female characters with similar depth and growth to male characters, but since most TV anime that leaves Japan is aimed at young male audiences, the character development tends to focus on the protagonist, with supporting characters also mainly focused on this.
Another case is that long-running shows have the edge, as they provide more room for female character growth. She also added that, one of the major influence on character development in anime is the manga’s influence:
The manga has female characters who are well-developed and have proven fan appeal, these characters are usually well presented in the anime so as not to alienate an important market segment.
