- El-Rufai, who left the APC for the SDP in March 2025, insists his return to politics is to protect national interest, not personal gain
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has issued a stark warning that Nigeria’s fragile social fabric could be irreparably damaged if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) secure reelection in 2027.
Speaking in Sokoto during a mobilisation rally organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition platform, El-Rufai openly declared his support for the movement, which seeks to unseat the APC at the next polls.

According to Daily Trust, he described the upcoming election as critical to the nation’s survival and urged Nigerians to rally behind efforts to bring about change.
“I believe that if we allow this party and the government to continue for a second term in office, what remains of Nigeria’s social capital will be destroyed, and we may not have a country at all. So, this is a fight for our lives,” El-Rufai warned.
He clarified that his renewed political engagement was not about personal ambition but rather about safeguarding national interests.
“I am not in politics to get anything for myself. I am in politics to serve. When the government does not serve the people, it is my duty as a senior citizen to come out and condemn it and take steps to reverse the situation,” he said.
El-Rufai expresses confidence in ADC chances
El-Rufai also explained that the ADC coalition had emerged as a response to what he described as policy failures of the ruling APC. According to him, the Sokoto event marks the beginning of a broader campaign to mobilise citizens nationwide against the current administration’s perceived shortcomings.

“We are in Sokoto to begin the process of mobilising Nigerians against the APC government anywhere and the federal government in Abuja,” he added.
A founding member of the APC, El-Rufai parted ways with the party in March 2025, joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP) amid rising dissatisfaction with the direction of Tinubu’s government.
His defection signalled a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, given his previous role as one of the APC’s key strategists.
Ex-Buhari minister declares war on Tinubu
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the former minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, had declared that the 2027 general elections would not just be another electoral cycle but a full-blown confrontation between the Nigerian people and the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during a recent interview on News Central, Dalung voiced strong dissatisfaction with the state of the nation, blaming the Tinubu-led government for deepening the hardship faced by ordinary citizens.
