Further tests have shown that Alex Iwobi tested negative to COVID-19 as confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation.
Iwobi was said to have tested positive for coronavirus on March 27, hours before Nigeria face Benin and was consequently out of the cracker.
Upon arrival in Benin Republic, the entire Super Eagles squad underwent the mandatory Covid-19 tests and Iwobi’s result was said to be positive.
The AFCON qualifier ended 1-0 in favour of Nigeria after Paul Ouachu nodded home in stoppage-time to stun the hosts who were said to have been hostile to the squad.
Super Eagles media officer Babafemi Raji later disclosed that the Everton of England star had left the squad and will be unavailable for the match against Lesotho on Tuesday, March 30.
“Iwobi has left the camp. Before he left, he did not show any symptoms, he was fine,” Eagles spokesman Babafemi Raji told AFP via Vanguard.
The 24-year-old scored twice during the qualifying campaign for the delayed Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Cameroon in January next year. And confirming his status, the NFF wrote:
“Update: @NGSuperEagles forward, @alexiwobi has tested negative after further COVID-19 tests were conducted.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria have qualified for the tournament in Cameroon as Gernot Rohr’s side confirmed qualification for the continental showpiece after Lesotho and Sierra Leone played goalless draw.
The sole ticket of the group will be contested for between Sierra Leone who host the Squirrels of Benin on Tuesday. A win for either side will see them automatically qualify for the continental showpiece.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Lesotho have arrived in Lagos ahead of their final Group L AFCON 2022 qualifier against the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
The Crocodiles are bottom of the group after playing five matches without a win including three draws and two losses.
Gernot Rohr’s side were victorious away in the first leg following a 4-2 scoreline with Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukweze and Victor Osimhen all getting their names on the scoresheet.
