The 10th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, marked a night of celebration, honouring both the trailblazers and the fresh talents in the African film industry.

“Breath of Life”, Directed by BB Sasore (awarded as the best director), emerged as the best movie for 2024 with its undisputed gripping narrative and breathtaking cinematography. Its Lead actor, Wale Ojo was also awarded the Best Lead Actor alongside Kehinde Bankole who won the Best Lead Actress award for her role in “Adire”.

The event highlighted the fusion of tradition and innovation, with “Breath of Life” clinching top honours for its captivating storytelling and technical prowess.

The Industry Merit Award was awarded to Esther Idowu Philips, fondly known as Iya Rainbow, and Richard Mofe-Damijo, in recognition of their enduring impact on African cinema.

“Jagun Jagun,” directed by Femi Adebayo, secured the Best Indigenous Language Film in West Africa award, while “Ormoilaa Ogol” (The Strong One) claimed the Best Indigenous Language Film in East Africa accolade, praised for their authentic portrayals.
The recognition also extended to emerging talents, with Layi Wasabi’s “Medical Negligence and Copyright Infringement” winning the Best Digital Content award.

The award ceremony, often called a mini-Oscar, brought together various celebrities from the entertainment industry, some hopeful they would win, while others came to support their fellow veterans.

The highly acknowledged movie “A Tribe Called Judah” which grossed N1bn within 21 days of its release, surprisingly couldn’t secure an award in any category, despite nominations in multiple categories such as Best Writing in a Movie, Best Lead Actress, Best Movie, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Makeup. Instead, Tunde Babalola’s script for “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” won Best Writing in a Movie, and the Best Supporting Actor award went to Demola Adedoyin for his performance in “Breath of Life,” outshining Timini Egbuson’s portrayal.
