Biyi Samuel – Shaping the Future of Highlife and Inspirational Music

By Ayo Onikoyi

Inspired by musical legends such as Lucky Dube, R Kelly, Sunny Ade, Jimmy Solanke, Kayode Fayemi, and a host of others, Biyi Samuel rise on the music scene has been meteoric. His music spans through the highlife and inspirational genres making him a must hear for all and sundry.

By merging storytelling with rhythmic progressions, Biyi Samuel has come to create a musical experience that not only entertains but also inspires and educates. He has been able to craft the ability to seamlessly fuse traditional and modern sounds allowing him to carve a niche for himself in the ever expanding music industry.

His devotion to his craft has earned him recognition both locally and internationally such as winning the 2017 Bezaleel Awards, Zamaar Praise of the Universe and a host of other awards. With his talent recognized and rewarded by these awards Biyi Samuel, no doubt, has proved his mettle as an internationally recognized musician.

Whether in performances in Nigeria, Africa at large, across Europe or the world Biyi has continued to spread his impact to thousands. Shedding light on how it all started he notes that, “I would simply say that my background has a huge impact on my music. As becoming a successful artiste goes beyond technical skill because you need to know how to connect with your audience through body language, movement, and charisma. This is crucial in my kind of music where the goal is to inspire.”

One thing that sets Biyi Samuel apart is the instrumentation in his music which is a crucial element of how he defines his style and sound which is unique. From his arrangements which often feature the use of classic highlife instruments such as the lead guitar, talking drum, congas among other things we can see the interpretation of pure musical artistry in his works. This combination works together to create a warm and rhythmic foundation for his sound which is loved by many.

As Biyi Samuel continues to give his old and new audiences his highlife and inspirational hits he continues to dominate the live performance scene offering nothing but good musical performances. Solidifying his stand with his music, he adds that, “Whether performing live or in the studio I ensure that every song carries a depth of emotion, allowing my audience to connect deeply with my music at every given time.”
