BREAKING: ECOWAS Considers Military Clash With Niger To Restore Bezoum

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said it might use military might to restore constitutional order in Niger Republic following the dramatic coup that ousted President Mohammad Bezoum from office.

ECOWAS also issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerien military headed by General Abdourahamane Tchiani to reinstate Bazoum as President.

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, made the announcement on Sunday, July 30, after an extraordinary meeting of leaders of ECOWAS member-states at the State House, Abuja, The Punch reported

Speaking on ECOWAS considering military clash with Nigeria, Touray said:

“Take all measures necessary to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger. Such measures may include the use of force.

“To this effect, the Chiefs of Defense Staff of ECOWAS are to meet immediately.”

He also announced that ECOWAS had imposed economic sanction against Niger Republic.

“Suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between ECOWAS Member States and Niger. Freeze all service transactions including energy transactions.

“Freeze assets of the Republic of Niger in Aqua Central Bank. Freeze of assets of the Niger State and the state enterprises and parastatals in commercial banks.

“Suspension of measure from all financial assistance and transactions with all financial institutions, particularly EBID.”

Tension rises in Niger Republic as Abdourahmane Tchiani declares himself new leader

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that General Abdourahmane Tchiani, on Friday, July 28, declared himself the new leader of Niger after a dramatic coup.

Also known as Omar Tchiani, he staged a takeover which started on Wednesday, July 26, when the presidential guards unit he led seized the country’s leader, Mohamed Bazoum.

Niger soldiers confirm coup, declare removal of President Bazoum on national television

Legit.ng had reported that soldiers in Niger Republic announced a coup on national television late Wednesday, July 26.

They were reported to have dissolved the constitution, suspended all institutions, and closed the nation’s borders. One of the rebel soldiers, Lieutenant Colonel Amadou Abdramane, said the army had decided to put an end to the administration of President Bazoum.

Guards detain Niger President Bazoum

Legit.ng also reported that President Bazoum was detained by guards inside the presidential palace in Niamey following an “ultimatum” by the army.

Sources said disgruntled members of the Presidential Guard sealed off access to the president’s residence and offices, adding that the guards “refused to release the president” after talks broke down.
