Minna, Niger – The police have denied the report that the Zungeru Hydro-Electric Power Dam exploded, and several persons have been injured, including a Chinese engineer, security personnel and many workers on site.
It was earlier reported that the cause of the explosion, which allegedly happened on Monday, July 1, was yet to be known. Several installations were said to have been destroyed.

Explosion allegedly rocks Niger Dam
According to Tribune, it was also said that a Chinese engineer was conducting a routine check when the explosion happened, and those injured were taken to the Minna General Hospital, the Niger state capital.
A source stated that the engineer was first admitted to the emergency ward of the hospital for treatment for burns on the head and hand. Still, due to the seriousness of the burns, he was referred to the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, for advanced medical attention.
The number of the workers and security personnel injured are currently unknown.
Police deny explosion in Zungeru Hydro-Electric Dam
However, the Niger state police command has refuted the report of an explosion at the dam, saying nothing of such had happened.
The spokesperson of the police in the state, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the report of the explosion was not true and that the power plant did not experience such an incident.
Also, Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, a parent company of Penstock Limited, which is in charge of the power plant, described the report of the explosion as “false and untrue”, The Punch reported.
Niger governor approves wage award
Legit.ng earlier reported that Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger state has announced an N20,000 wage award to workers in the state to caution against the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.
The governor’s approval came barely two days after President Bola Tinubu visited the state to commission some projects.
During his visit, Tinubu appealed to the governors to commence the payment of the wages award pending the commencement of the new minimum wage.
