The knockout match had seven different goalscorers. While Scott McTominay, Antony, Marcus Rashford, and Amad Diallo, were on the scoresheet for the home side, Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah, and Harvey Elliot netted for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Erik ten Hag’s side had led early through McTominay but Liverpool then took the lead with two goals in just three minutes before half-time.
Manchester United’s final chance of winning a trophy this season appeared to have ended but Antony popped up with a fine late goal to make it 2-2 and send the game to extra-time.
More drama was to come, with Elliott firing Liverpool in front with a heavily deflected goal before Rashford again equalised – Diallo then scored a 120th-minute winner to send United into the hat for the semi-finals.
Manchester United fan reacts
Reacting to United’s triumph, Agunbiade Arinola said it was a “very needed win” to boost the players’ confidence going forward.
The lifelong United fan also stated that United deserved the win because they “showed a different mentality”.
He told Legit.ng:
“First the positives, Alejandro Garnacho has really developed into an important player. His mentality is solid, taking on defenders, creating assists and tracking back down the wing when we are off-possession.
“Andre Onana has stepped up; at least he didn’t concede any useless goal today.
“Generally, the team did well, especially in the second half’s last quarter and extra time. They stood against their opponent with the winning mentality.
“Our coach still has lots to do. He was lucky with his dynamic formation at extra time.”
On the negatives, Arinola said United had a “very poor” start to the second half till the 75 minutes.
He said:
“Our midfielders look tired, losing possessions easily and also losing each of Liverpool’s players.”
