Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore has confirmed that he was caught in the magnitude 4.8 earthquake that hit New York City, surrounding suburbs, and New Jersey on Friday morning, April 5.

As reported by CBS, a strong earthquake sent shockwaves throughout New York City and the surrounding area on Friday morning.

The 4.8 quake was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, 40 miles west of New York City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It hit at approximately 10:23 a.m.

The impact was felt throughout the Tri-State Area, including upstate in Syracuse, as well as in Philadelphia and as far away as Baltimore. Reports of buildings shaking and rattling came in from New Jersey to Long Island.

In addition to New York and New Jersey, the quake was felt in parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts as well, Variety reported.

Similarly, Legit.ng reported earlier that an earthquake in Taiwan with a magnitude of 7.7, which is the strongest the nation has experienced in 25 years on Wednesday, April 3, killed seven person and injured at least 700 others.

The earthquake also caused building collapses, power outages and landslides on the island, apart from sparking initial tsunami warnings in southern Japan and the Philippines.
