President Bola Tinubu has approved the return of the delegation of the leaders of the Islamic scholars to the Niger Republic for another round of negotiation with the military junta leader, General Abdourahmane Tchiani.

The President concluded after meeting with the Islamic leaders known as the Ulama under the leadership of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

This was disclosed in a tweet by NTA on Thursday, August 24.

Recall that the Bauchi-led negotiation team were recently in Niamey, the capital of the Niger Republic, to dialogue with the coup leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani.

Tinubu’s decision was based on his capacity as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Tiani, the leader of the Nigerien presidential guard brigade, overthrew his democratically elected boss through a coup on July 26.

Since the development, the ECOWAS has imposed sanctions on its West African neighbour in its reactions to the coup and maintained that the use of force was on the table against the military leader.

The West African bloc has also approved the deployment of a “standby force to restore constitutional order” in the politically disturbed country but expressed its commitment to taking a diplomatic route in solving the problem.

Abdulsalami Abubakar, the former Nigerian head of state and ECOWAS envoy to Niger, disclosed that his delegation’s meeting with the coup leaders in Niger Republic last weekend was fruitful.
