There is growing tension and anxiety in Adamawa State as a female soldier on duty to ensure the curfew imposed by the state government reportedly gunned down a female colleague at a checkpoint in the state capital, Yola.
According to Daily Trust, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri imposed a curfew in the state following the breaking of the government warehouses and looting of several items by some hoodlums, including palliatives kept to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.
The female soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Nkiru, shot the captain while he was trying to intervene in her altercation with civilians at the Fire Service Round About in Yola.
Security sources privy to the incident revealed that the female soldier was insisting that motorists returning home during the hour of the curfew have to return.
Some motorists identified themselves as essential workers on duty, but the female soldier would not change her ground.
A security officer said:
“Some people stopped at the checkpoint explained themselves as workers on essential duties, but the female soldier insisted they must turn back. A captain came forward to intervene. Unfortunately, she had already cocked her rifle, so she fired and killed him accidentally.”
The victim was reportedly rushed to the federal medical centre in the state capital where he was confirmed death, while the suspect was immediately arrested and whisked away by a fellow soldier.
