During an exclusive interview with the City People Magazine team led by the publisher, Dr Seye Kehinde, in Ibadan, veteran of the theatre, Dele Odule, discussed his illustrious 47-year career in theatre arts. The interview, which took place in celebration of City People’s 28th anniversary, provided an in-depth look into Odule’s journey from his early days in theatre to his current endeavours.

Odule, who embarked on his theatrical career in 1977, shared his early influences and passion for the arts, which also comprises singing and drawing. His commitment to education led him to study Mass Communication at Olabisi Onabanjo University later in life, a decision he made to enhance his professional growth.

Discussing the theatre industry, Odule stated the importance of determination and discipline. Despite early challenges, including exploitation by some veterans, his resolute approach enabled him to succeed. Odule has played a major role in theatre politics, being a key figure in organizations like ANTP and President of TAMPAN.

For aspiring actors, Odule stated the important role of education and a thorough understanding of the theoretical aspects of acting. He also revealed his exciting upcoming project: a Theatre Village that will host daily live performances.

Outside of his professional life, Odule described himself as principled and not a tough man as many presume, with a love for table tennis and a preference for a comfortable living environment. When questioned about his interest in Nigerian politics, he remained focused on theatre politics as his primary concern.
