Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness – Alison Austin

As therapists and coaches, we routinely incorporate a range of mindfulness techniques into our practice.

According to research, 90% of the population will live through some kind of traumatic event, with some people going on to develop debilitating symptoms in its aftermath.

Meanwhile, whilst mindfulness has experienced a surge in popularity, research has also shown that, in certain circumstances, mindfulness meditation can actually exacerbate symptoms of traumatic stress. For those of us offering mindfulness to others, it’s clear then that this lays a certain responsibility at our feet.

Drawing from empirical research, as well as the workshop leader’s own personal experience of mindfulness practice, this workshop will outline some of the pros and cons of mindfulness with respect to trauma.

It will share some of the theory behind trauma-sensitive mindfulness, and offer a number of practical techniques that you can take away and apply when offering mindfulness to others.
