The Reds have had one of the worst title defences in recent years, with their biggest consolation this season being their chance to play in the Champions League next season.

Known to many, Liverpool have struggled defensively as teams fully took advantage of their torrid home form which was largely because of a very naïve defence.

Key defensive figures like Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip suffered long term injuries early in the season, while other players with leadership qualities like Jordan Henderson were also out for lengthy spells.

While discussing his side’s season, Klopp was adamant nobody would have been capable of defending their title with the injuries they had.

“With our injuries it was not the year to become champions,” Klopp said as quoted by BBC

“No chance – for nobody.

“As good as they are, if City have their three centre-halves out, no [they don’t win the league]. Three centre-halves of [Manchester] United, no.

“We have fought back a bit, accepted the difficulties and made the best of it, and if we win on Sunday, and if we qualify for the Champions League, then we made the best of it. That is it.”

Liverpool were top of the table at Christmas and were enjoying a fairly impressive season as defending Champions until a flurry of injuries completely derailed their campaign.

They went to one of the worst home spells of any top, losing six games on the spin at Anfield, including a defeat to the now relegated Fulham.

Late in the season, they have managed to bounce back, managing seven wins in their last nine games in a run of form that has put them in charge of their own top four ambitions.

During their title-winning campaign, Klopp always hailed his side’s mentality, something which has been lacking at times this season.
