Just In: Former Spokesperson of Nigerian Military, Major General Onyeuko, Dies Suddenly in Abuja

FCT, AbujaA former director of Defence Media Operations, Major-General Bernard Onyeuko has reportedly passed on.

According to The Nation newspaper, Onyeuko died at a private hospital in Abuja on Saturday, August 26.

Sorrow as Gen. Onyeuko dies

A report by Leadership newspaper said that Onyeuko passed away after complaining of cold. He was said to have been rushed to a private hospital where he breathed his last.

The deceased compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Army after the recent appointment of new service chiefs.

Reacting to the news, Garba Shehu, the official spokesperson to the immediate past president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, mourned his “friend”.

He wrote on his verified X (formerly known as Twitter) handle:

“Just read the shocking news that we have lost our friend, the former military spokesperson, Major-General Bernard Onyeuko (rtd).

“May the Almighty grant fortitude to the family to bear the loss. RIP.”

Group slams critics of defence chief

In a piece of related news, Legit.ng reported that the Concerned North East Citizens (CNEC) reacted to the controversies surrounding the incumbent Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa.

Speculations have questioned his religious tolerance, alleging that he is a bigot.

In response to the speculations, the CNEC debunked these allegations in a statement issued by its secretary-general, Awwal Ahmed.

Military buries 22 officers killed in Niger

Legit.ng also reported that it was a scene of uncontrollable tears and pain as family members and friends gathered at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja to bury some Nigerian military personnel who died in combat in Niger state.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) earlier announced that no fewer than 36 officers were killed in battle, including an air mission, on August 14.

Lt General Oladipo Diya is dead

In case you missed it, Legit.ng reported the demise of Lt-General Oladipo Diya (Rtd), a former Chief of General Staff (CGS) to the former head of state Sani Abacha.

General Diya, as he was popularly known, died in the early hours of Sunday, March 26, 2023.
