Kam Geez unveils “Grimas”: A journey back to his roots

By Ayo Onikoyi

Rising Hip-Hop artist Kam Geez has dropped his latest single, Grimas, a track that takes listeners on a journey through his Haitian heritage and personal experiences. With production by Webbphantom, Grimas blends motivation with infectious rhythm, creating a sound that resonates deeply with his audience. The artist unravels the secrets of the new song as well as his musical journey and growth in an interview with Ayo Onikoyi Vanguard’s Group Entertainment Editor. EXCERPTS:

What is your “Grimas” single all about and what were the creative and production processes like?

“Grimas” is just all about tracing back to my roots, being of Haitian descent. “Grimas,” which means silliness, is not tolerated. I was in the studio going through beats and when I got to the beat produced by Webbphantom, it just instantly caught my attention. It gave me that feeling, which took me back a little in time when I was finding my way; trying to make things happen for myself. I just locked in and put my experience on wax.

Is the new single just another dance song or is there more to it, in view of the message, rhythm and lyrics?

This record is—moreso—about being relatable and motivational. I love to put people in the spirit that makes them go for theirs but also sonically have it so everyone can vibe and enjoy it.

How important are women to your music and how do they influence it?

When it comes to the ladies, they are very important to my music—especially when needing input. I love to hear a woman’s perspective. I have a lot of music inspired by experiences with women. Women play a big part—being an influence on my music. Without women, I feel like there would be some type of lack of motivation because as men, we do a lot for women—especially when trying to impress them.

What are the elements that influence and dictate the flow of Kam Geez”s music?

The elements I would say are: Life experiences, such as having ups and downs, relations with a significant other or just trial and error. Authenticity is key to the flow of my music. It makes me who I am and the music what it is.

What genre of music do you really do and do you think it is advisable for a music artist to stick to just one genre?

I do Hip-Hop but also R&B-inspired… very melodic but raw as well! Being an artist is being a creative. I think it’sdope when an artist thinks outside the box and tries new things! I think you should do what you think is best! Stick to what works for you!

Can you share the story of your life and why music became the big option?

I was always inspired to be a musician! My dad played in a Kompa band, which is Haitian Jazz. When I was growing up, finding myself, and figuring out life, Hip-Hop was always there. It was the genre of music that helped me get through a lot and music, in general, was very much relatable to whatever position I was in life. When it came time, I just took that leap of faith! I wanted to be an artist because I wanted to inspire people the same way I got inspired.

What have been the most remarkable feedback from your repertoire of music and your intended response?

The best feedback is whenever I’m outside and run into someone familiar with my music. Just getting that acknowledgement, and people reaching out through social media to show love gives me that encouragement to keep doing what I’m doing! I just want to continue to inspire and keep going and also follow my purpose.

You were raised by your mother, how did that shape your world view, beliefs and biases?

I was raised by my mother but I was a kid who moved a lot… So sometimes, I would go back and forth to my dad’shouse or other family members. But being with my mom was memorable. She was a single mother who raised 4 boys and did her best and still is! From everyday grinding, I learned that from my mother. I saw her wake up every day—take no days off—to run her business and do what she had to do to provide!

Which Nigerian music artist would you like to collaborate with and why?

I’m still learning about more Nigerian artistry but I like Oxlade, Tems and Wizkid! I like their music a lot! I think creating with them would be dope!

What’s your ultimate goal and dream as a musician?

My ultimate goal is to reach my fullest potential. I would love to get some plaques for my accolades—also would like to put another artist on. I want to not just change my life but also other people’s lives as well.

Amongst all your songs which is your favourite and why?

I have many favorites! Anytime I record a new batch of music, I’m amazed at myself! If you ask me another time, I would have a different answer but my favorite is an unreleased song titled “Part of the Game.” My favorite released song is “Priceless.” I was really talking to the ladies on that one.

What does good music mean to you and who are your favourites in this regard?

Good music means the most to me. Music can change your life—both for an artist and the consumer. Good music brings people together from all walks of life. That’s powerful! I have so many. My favorites are Stack Bundles, Nipsey Hussle, Sade, Tupac, Future, Johnny Cinco, Money Man… the list goes on but my biggest inspiration comes from Dipset.
