- Kieran Trippier left fans baffled after he chose to wear two different boots for the better part of the first half against Manchester City
- The Newcastle United fullback had an issue with his right boot in the 15th minute, and he picked up a different design
- The former Tottenham Hotspur player is understood to have run out of his with Adidas deal and might be looking for a new deal
Manchester City were held to a one-all draw by a resilient Newcastle United at the St.James Park on Saturday afternoon.
Anthony Gordon scored from the spot to cancel out Josko Gvardiol’s goal on a day when Erling Haaland was frustrated by the Magpies’ defence.
It was the first Premier League game of the season that the Norwegian failed to find the net.
Apart from Haaland’s struggles, Kieran Trippier also stole some of the headlines with his fashion statement in the first half.
Trippier, who has had to work his way back into Eddie Howe’s plans after much talk about a possible summer exit, started alongside Fabian Schar, Lewis Hall, and Dan Burn in defence.
Why Trippier wore mismatched boots vs Manchester City
In the 15th minute, the retired England international needed a change of boots after an incident with Jack Grealish. Trippier, however, only changed one boot, leaving fans surprised as he returned to play with two different sets.
The 34-year-old rocked both Puma and Adidas boots after choosing to swap only one of them. GMS reports that Mario Balotelli has previously won boots of different colours as part of a marking strategy.
Footy Headlines adds that Trippier recently ended his 10-year partnership with Adidas and might be looking to woo other sponsors. He returned for the second half wearing the purple Puma Ultra cleat.
The 1-1 result maintained Manchester City’s unbeaten start to the season but saw them surrender the top spot to Liverpool. Newcastle are further back in seventh with 11 points.
