Musicians are hardly satisfied after releasing a hit song until they have shot and released a good video to promote it. Little wonder Nigerian artistes now release the video of their songs shortly after dropping the audio online.
Some even go as far as shooting a controversial video with nude, busty, and butt-in-the-trunk girls, all to attract viewership. In no particular order, below is a list of the most watched Nigerian music videos on YouTube and their punch lines.
Yemi Alade- ‘Johnny’ (over 93.0 million views)
Effyzzie Entertainment songbird, Yemi Eberechi Alade, registered her presence on the Nigerian music scene in 2009, but didn’t receive the kind of attention she craved until 2013 when she released her hit song ‘Johnny’, which immediately became a street anthem.
The song which hilariously tells the story of a love-struck lady in desperate quest to recover her man who has fallen for the antics of another woman, later came out with a comic video which enjoyed major airplay on major TV stations locally and internationally. With a whooping 93,034,140 million views- the highest ever recorded by a Nigerian or African artiste- the video of the song which is now 5-years old is currently YouTube’s most viewed African female music video and most viewed Nigerian music video of all time, Little wonder in a recent interview, the ‘How I feel’ crooner claimed bragging rights over Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Niniola, Simi and other music heavyweights.
P-Square- ‘Personally’ (over 84.3 million views, ‘Taste the money’ over 35.5 million views, ‘Collabo’ over 60.4 million views, ‘Shekini’ over 60.2 million views, ‘Bank alert’ over 51.0
Before their controversial break-up, the Okoye brothers, Peter and Paul Okoye, popularly known as P-Square were usually a cynosure mere word couldn’t describe during their heydays as a music duo. With a record of 84,334,288 million YouTube views to the video of their 2014 hit song, ‘Personally’, they beat Davido, Wizkid and others to it as the second most watched Nigerian music video on YouTube.
The video of their song, ‘Collabo’, released on February 23, 2015, shot by Clarence Peters in South Africa, featuring Don Jazzy, has accrued over 60,469,335 million YouTube views to its credit. Also their 2014 song, ‘Shekini’, which became a street anthem for its punch lines and eclectic dance steps, boasts of 60,224,184 million views. The video of ‘Taste the money’ which was also released on May 8, 2014, has garnered about 35, 597,415 million views, a feat which some of Wizkid or Davido’s old hits have been unable to achieve. No doubts, they have been able to achieve this feat through mind-blowing dance steps, catchy lyrics, and of cause, their pedigree as a singing duo who never fails to thrill.
Tekno- ‘Pana’ (77.7 million views, ‘Where’ 32.9 million views, ‘Duro’ 46.1 million
When Tekno released the video of his 2016 smash hit, ‘Pana’, on August 22, there was a mad craze to see what the controversial ‘Slim Daddy’, as he fondly calls himself, would portray in the video because he had always boasted of being a unique artiste in his own space. True to his word, the video was worth anticipating with its crystal clear picture quality, message and creative dance steps.
So far, the video has attracted 77,713,111 million views on YouTube, and it doesn’t stop there, as lovers of the ‘Jogodo’ crooner continue to take a peek at the smashing video. Though there is a glaring difference, the video of his songs, ‘Duro’ and ‘Where’, boasts of 46,114,926 and 32,948,897 million views respectively on YouTube.
Mr. Eazi- ‘Leg over’ (over 32.9 million views)
How he was able to warm his way into the hearts of music lovers with his rare breed of music which has a creative blend of Ghanaian/Nigerian rhythm stills remains a mystery to many music pundits and critics.
However, he has been able to secure an enviable spot on the music scene with good tunes, backed up with captivating music videos. Little wonder his 2016 hit song, ‘Leg over’, has accrued 32,683,199 million views on YouTube. His baritone voice, lyrical content and visual concepts are always one to look out for whenever he drops a project.
Runtown- ‘Mad over you’ (70.5 million views)
After the success of his song, ‘Gallardo’, which featured Davido, self-styled ‘Soundgod’, Runtown, continued to stamp his feet on the competitive music industry. On releasing his 2016 street anthem, ‘Mad over you’, to a wide acceptance, massive airplay on radio stations, clubs and major fun spots, his fans clamored for the video which he later released.
The video shows Runtown expressing love for his partner using all means possible, so why won’t his fans rush to watch it when they know they could learn something that would be useful to them? The video currently enjoys a juicy 70,543,88 million views on YouTube.
Korede Bello- ‘Do like that’ (71.0 million views)
Korede Bello’s ‘Do like that’ was arguably one of the most played songs on radio stations as at the time of its release. This probably propelled him to shoot the video which has since garnered award nominations including City People Music Award for Music Producer of the Year, City People Music Award for Popular Song of the Year, and a YouTube view of 71,067,403 million. Obviously, it is loved for its message which questions the attitudes of a lover who seems not to care about the feelings of his/her partner.
Davido- ‘IF’ (over 67.0 million views, ‘Aye’ 49.1 million views, ‘Fall’ 79.1 million views)
After taking the music industry by storm with his debut songs, ‘Back when’ and ‘Gobe’, Davido, took his fans by surprise again with ‘Aye’. The video which was released on February 7, 2014, currently has about 49,761,232 million views on YouTube. What more could attract the attention of an international artiste of R-Kelly’s pedigree to jump on his February 2017 hit song, ‘IF’, besides the fact that the lyrics, message, rhythm, vocals, and video of the song were exceptional.
In less than two years, the video has attracted 67,069,682 million views on YouTube. Obviously dramatizing the message of the song in the video, Davido stylishly expresses his love intentions to a prospective lover, exploiting catchy lines and a thrilling rhythm to spice it up.
On June 2, 2017, he released another hit track, ‘Fall’, packed with the assuring promises of a player who finally falls in love. As characteristic of Davido, he wasted no time in releasing a good video to back it up. The video happens to be his most watched video on YouTube with 79,140,873 million views.
Wizkid- ‘Come closer’ (61.5 million views)
Surprisingly, all of his hit songs prior to the release of his international collaboration, Come closer’, with American rapper/singer, Drake, cannot boast of YouTube views up to 30 million. However, though Drake wasn’t in the video, it hit over 1million views within 24 hours of its release. As of now, the video has about 61,585,633 million views on YouTube.
With an alternating blend of dancehall and afro-pop, spiced up with a danceable rhythm capable of igniting a love tryst, the song has since become a street anthem while the video continues to enjoy massive rotations on both local and international TV stations.
Chidinma- ‘Fallen in love’ (over 45.1 million views)
When many thought she had gone into oblivion, Chidinma, aka ‘Miss Kedike’, as she fondly calls herself, proved critics wrong with the audio and video of her song ‘Fallen in love’. As expected, the song received wide recognition and the video has been attracting views from music lovers. Currently, the video has a whopping 45,133,580 million views. Telling the story of how a young lady falls helplessly in love against all odds with the man of her dreams, Chidinma delivers a unique tune using her beautiful voice.
Flavour Na’bania- ‘Ada Ada’ (over 33.3 million views)
Since he established himself as the new school king of Igbo highlife music, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Flavour Na’bania, has continued to prove his worth on the Nigerian music scene. He further stole his way into the hearts of ladies (even non Igbos) with the release of ‘Ada Ada’. Painting the mental picture of a typical Igbo traditional wedding setting in the video of the song, he has been able to attract 33, 397,780 million views for the video of the song released on June 30, 2013.
