My terrifying experience acting with a snake around my neck – Chiamaka Austin

..Says, I was once rejected and declared unfit to be an actress

By BENJAMIN NJOKU

Chiamaka Austin, a rising star in Nollywood, shares her inspiring story of overcoming rejection and fear to become a successful actress and producer. Recalling how it all started, Chiamaka said, “I actually stumbled upon an audition, and that was how I got introduced to Nollywood. But what really attracted me to acting was the opportunity to tell authentic African stories and showcase our culture to a global audience.

“My dreams and desires include telling impactful stories that inspire, educate, and entertain audiences globally, empowering women in the industry and creating opportunities for them to shine. On a personal level, I aspire to continue pushing the boundaries of my craft, taking on challenging roles and becoming an A-list actor. I also dream of featuring in streaming giants’ commissioned movies like Netflix, Amazon Prime among others,” Chiamaka added.

Becoming a Producer

“I remember when they told me that I was not fit to be an actor because of my physical appearance. They said that I don’t possess certain heights that would put me at an advantage. But thank God I encouraged myself. Today, I am producing my own movie. It’s been as challenging as it’s also been a rewarding journey.

Overcoming Fears

Chiamaka also shared a terrifying experience of interpreting a role with a python around her neck. Despite her fear of snakes, she pushed through and delivered a remarkable performance. She said, “I am not a fan of snakes but the thought of me carrying a python round my neck was unbelievable but as an actress I knew I had to push through my fears and deliver. I took some deep breaths, focused on my character, motivations and reminded myself that the snake handlers were professionals and they were there.” Chiamaka’s experiences have taught her to push through obstacles and face her fears. She refuses to give up on her dreams, having suffered and has overcome numerous challenges throughout her career.

Professionalism

When asked about kissing on movie sets, Chiamaka emphasized her professionalism, stating that she plays her roles without emotional attachment and only does what is required for the character. “I don’t get emotionally attached to anyone. I am playing that role not as a Chiamaka but as the character at the moment . I am not even a lover of kisses, so if I have my ways I won’t kiss on set but I have to because it’s a movie,” the actress stated.
