Today’s parents are more willing to be emotionally connected to their kids

In a chat with, Kelvin Bob-Manuel, @ogamaestro who shared the same sentiment on parenting style with Keppy Ekpenyong pointed out how communication has greatly defined better parenting in the world.

According to the communication specialist, there is no unique way to parent kids, but parenting styles have gotten better. He said:

“There’s no one way to do parenting. It’s a unique “calling”. Have styles gotten better than our parents’ time? Yes! Is there more work to be done? Yes. There needs to be a balance; understanding when to spare the rod and when to use it. In summary, things have gotten better. Today’s Parents are more willing to be emotionally connected with their kids that our parents.”

Are Gen Z’s having life easier than millennials?

Bob-Manuel also pointed out the differences in how millennials were raised and how the gen Z kids are being raised these days.

He opined:

“Millenials as I am were raised with iron fist in tough love style. We had *so many* restrictions that it’s alien to break away from it now. E.g many of us seeing hanging out as unnecessary, waste of time, energy sapping. Our parents went from restricting us from going out to “you no get friends? You too dey siddon for house”. The irony right? Many of us became shy, timid etc as a result of many of these restrictions amongst many things. Today’s parents seem open to letting their kids make mistakes with guidance. E.g “go out but be home by xyz time” or “bring your friends over. I’ll like to get to know them.”

Lastly, according to the communication specialist, the fact that Keppy Ekpenyong turned out fine because his parents style worked doesn’t mean it would work for another family.

He advised:

“I’m not in a place to suggest how parents should raise their kids. Like I said earlier, styles are unique to each parent/family. He appeared to turn out fine so safe to say his parents’ style worked. Is there something to learn from that? Yes. But to each his own.”
