Tatyana Tomashova’s London 2012 Medal Officially Stripped, Banned for 10 Years

Nov 19, 2024 | Entertainment, News

  • Tatyana Tomashova’s silver medal in the women’s 1500m at the 2012 London Olympics has officially been taken away
  • Tomashova became the latest participant in that race to be banned after she was initially awarded the silver medal
  • The now 49-year-old Russian athlete was also banned for 10 years, with the IOC now forced to reallocate the medals again

It remains to be one of the ‘dirtiest races ever.’ Five of the 12 athletes who took to the track to compete in the women’s 1500m final at the 2012 Olympics in London have since been banned from the sport.

Tatyana Tomashova was the latest to be sanctioned. The Russian athlete was banned for 10 years in September, with authorities now confirming that her silver medal has been taken away.

Turkish duo Asli Cakir Alptekin and Gamze Bulut finished 1-2 ahead of Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain.

However, after Alptekin and Bulut were found guilty of biological passport violations, Jamal was upgraded to gold. Tomashova was upgraded to silver, with Abeba Aregawi of Ethiopia moving to the bronze position.

Tomashova was sanctioned after the Athletics Integrity Unit found out she had used a prohibited substance. All her results from 21 June 2012 until 3 January 2015, including the silver medal awarded to her, were thereby disqualified.

Tatyana Tomashova banned for 10 years

The 2003 and 2005 World champion, who had previously served doping bans, was banned from the sport for 10 years. She also won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

“The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld the AIU’s charge and banned Tatyana Tomashova (Russia) for 10 years from 3 September 2024 for the Use of a Prohibited Substance/Method (McLaren and LIMS evidence),” said AIU.

The bans now mean Kenya’s Hellen Obiri has risen to seventh after originally finishing 12th. Jamal has the gold, Aregawi has the silver, and America’s Shannon Rowbury will be awarded bronze.

Blessing Okagbare banned for 10 years

Legit.ng had earlier reported that Blessing Okagbare was suspended during the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo after failing a drug test.

The former athlete reportedly tested positive for blood booster EPO in June 2021 and human growth hormone in July 2021 in Slovakia, resulting in her disqualification from the Tokyo Olympics.
